In 2005, the number of blogs on the Internet reached 70 million (Blog Herald
). Why the big interest in blogging?
A study has shown that the majority of the people who blog actively are doing so either because they like to write or want to earn money. Some want to do both (Revenews.com
). Of survey participants, 36 percent said the primary reason they blogged was that they enjoyed writing, whereas 28 percent had financial motives. Blogging jobs and freelance blogging contracts are increasing, and it is becoming common to see blogs with some external affiliations.
The Blog Herald indicated the majority of blogs originate in the United States and South Korea, summing up to 15-30 million and 15 million respectively. The most popular host site of blogs is Xanga at 40 million blogs, followed by others like MSN spaces, Blogger and Cyworld at around 10-15 million blogs each.
However, an April 2007 survey showed that only 21 percent of the blogs in the survey were active, meaning the blog's author had posted new content within the last 90 days (Business Week
). It seems that writers of blogs seem to be fully enjoying their freedom to publish at will. On the other hand, readers will find it a challenge to determine which blogs will have timely, interesting and trustworthy content. Readers can refer to the encyclopedia entry on misinformation for tips on how to distinguish reliable information from the enormous amounts of data published on the Internet.
