Biometrics is the practice of using biological information to authenticate people (verify their identity). This information can be related to a person's behavior (e.g., their signature) or physical characteristics (e.g., their fingerprint patterns). For example, a computer that used voice recognition to authenticate users would ask you to speak into a microphone to log on. It would then compare your vocal pitch and intonation to a record it has of your speech patterns. If there were a match, it would allow you to log on.
The most common biological patterns used for authentication are:
- Fingerprints
- Eye retinas
- Eye irises
- Voice patterns
- Facial patterns
- Hand measurements
- Signature recognition
You can find biometric authentication in places like immigration centers, high-security bank safes, and computers. Microsoft has announced the incorporation of biometrics in future versions of Windows, so you may soon be able to use your fingerprints to log in to your Windows account.
