A client is any computer that can connect to a server and use the resources it controls, such as Web pages or other files, a connection to a printer, Internet access or even email. Initially, client was the name given to those terminals in the network that allowed humans to interact with a server or network but did not have any processing capability itself. These days, however, even if the terminal has processing capability, it might connect to the remote machine in order to request more services. A browser on any terminal, for example, makes it a client such that it makes requests to the servers over the Internet.
For a client to fetch data or use the resources stored on the server, it needs a network to which both the client and the server are connected. Hence, computers or their programs that do not send or receive data over the network cannot be termed clients.
