Pay Per Click

An arrangement whereby Web advertisers pay Web site owners for each click on an advertisement.

Pay per click, or cost per click, is an advertising technique used on Web sites, especially search engines. In search engines, when a site visitor performs a search and gets search results, the advertisements typically appear on the side. Each time a visitor clicks on the ad, the advertiser is charged a small amount. Many companies have pay-per-click search engines.

The more an advertiser is willing to pay, the more prominently his ad will appear. Typical prices per click range from U.S. $0.01 to U.S. $0.50. The most popular search engines charge more. If not arranged properly, pay per click can be subject to click fraud.

Some of the most popular search engines providing pay per click advertising are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and MSN AdCenter.
