Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

The set of rules for communication on which most major networks are based

TCP/IP is the set of rules for communication on which most major networks, such as the Internet, are based. It has become the de facto standard for transmitting data over the Internet, and all operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux, come equipped with TCP/IP. The suite is named after its two most important protocols: the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP).
