Web browsers are software applications that allow you to access Web pages. They interpret the files that the Web pages are based on and show you the information in a format you can read.
There are many Web browsers available via free download. The most popular are Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)
, Mozilla Firefox
, and Apple Safari
.
Web browsers offer several features that make Web surfing easier. Some of these basic features include:
- History: This feature keeps a list of Web sites that you have visited in the recent past. To see your History in both IE and Firefox, press Ctrl+ H in the browser window.
- Back and forward buttons: These buttons on the toolbar allow you to navigate through recently visited pages.
- Favorites/bookmarks: This feature allows you to save favorite or useful Web pages in a folder.
- Opening multiple pages: By selecting File > New > Window in IE, you can open additional browser windows so that you can have several Web pages open at once. There is also a multi-tab feature in Mozilla, Safari, and the latest beta version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 that allows you to keep multiple Web pages open in a series of tabs. This can be done by pressing Ctrl-T in the browser window to open up a new tab.
Web browsers also include security features to protect you from malicious Web sites. Internet Explorer, for example, allows you to select different security levels for different Web sites, depending on how trusted the Web sites are. See Web browsing - Malware to learn how to set your security levels and add Web sites to your list of trusted sites.
