Webmail

An application that lets you read and write emails using a Web browser

Webmail is an application that lets you read and write emails using a Web browser instead of an email application. Many Internet companies, such as Microsoft Hotmail  and Yahoo Mail , offer webmail, but you can sometimes get webmail access to regular email systems, such as your work email account.

Protective Measures

Practices

  • Do not keep sensitive information in your webmail account: When you use webmail, your email is kept on the webmail provider's servers and is subject to their policies. Check your provider's privacy statement to learn how they may use your personal information.

  • Log out when you are done using webmail: Always log out after checking your webmail account so that others cannot access your email.

  • Close your Web browser when you are done using webmail: To make sure your account information is deleted from the browser, close the application when you are done using your webmail.

Legal Issues

Privacy

Since your email is stored on your webmail provider's servers, your provider can have access to any information you keep there. Check your provider's privacy statement, and be aware of how they may use the information you store in your webmail account.
